I started this portrait during on this week's Daz+ Live Stream, in which I was showing how to use a head scan from 3D.sk with the Genesis 8 figure. We let the audience vote which scan I should use, and to my surprise it was a very close tie between Matthew Parry and Alexia Madrid. In the end I did both, and here's how he came out... well not exactly, there's quite the difference between how he started out, and what happened after spending an additional two hours on details and postwork.
After wrapping the head, we decided to let him be a pirate. I liked the idea of using a really short focal length and making the finger a major focus point in the image, much like the "America needs you" poster. Although the scan had great detail, the Genesis figure's base resolution isn't high enough to reproduce it all, so Matthew lost some features. I've combatted that by first trying out the Floyd skin texture, then finally settling with the one from Underbelly. I didn't like his left hand much, so I decided to put a prop in it - and the Teddy Bear was a fun choice.
A finishing touch was the background. I wanted to add something rather dramatic and trawled Canva for a suitable rain or thunder backdrop, until I found this skyline with a lighting bold. I blurred it out, darkened it and restored the bolt in focus as if all the negative energy in town discharged in this moment.
